St.Valentine’s Day at Hopetoun Tea Rooms, Melbourne.

メルボルンのホープタウンティールームでバレンタインデーを過ごすことに。

Inside one of the most beautiful historic shopping arcades, the Block Arcade in Central Melbourne, I am celebrating St.Valentine’s Day in authentic Victorian surroundings.

メルボルン中心地、歴史のあるアーケード “ブロックアーケード”の中にあるこのお店。ビクトリア様式に囲まれた場所でバレンタインデーのお祝いです。

 

This charming cake display belongs to the Hopetoun Tea Rooms which has been serving delicious cakes and tea since 1892.

思わず見とれてしまうこのケーキディスプレイ。1892年からケーキとお茶を提供しています。

It’s interior reflects its history.  Sitting inside the tea rooms is like stepping back in time.

インテリアからも歴史を感じます。店内にいるだけで時代を遡っているような感覚に陥ります。

Here is my slice of  Black Forest with Modemoiselle Grey tea (Earl Grey blended with rose petals).  The most delicious Black forest I’ve tasted so far!

これはブラックフォレスト。マドモアゼルグレイ（バラの花びらを加えたアールグレイ）と一緒に楽しみます。今まで食べたブラックフォレスとの中で最高のテイストでした！

 Chatting gently to my sweetheart who is absorbed in his Raspberry Tart while sipping organic Lemon Myrtle tea.

ラズベリータルトとレモンマートル・オーガニックティーに夢中のダーリンとお話も。

Sharing a piece of the Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake decoracted with a gelatinized Hibiscus.

ゼラチン状のハイビスカスでデコレーションされたピスタチオ・ラズベリーチーズケーキは２人でシェア。

Afternoon treat at Nicolas, Sangenchaya.

三軒茶屋、Nicolasでおやつ。

My friend and I were really happy to have found Nicolas after spending a long time in Sangenchaya, looking for a decent cafe where we could both enjoy some quality afternoon tea!

三軒茶屋でいろいろ探し回った後、Nicolasを見付けたときはワタシも友達も最高の気分！素敵なおやつを楽しめる上品なカフェです。

This was my very delicious and very flaky cherry pie.  It was mildly sweet, served with raspberry sorbet.  It tasted and looked like heaven!

これはワタシのチェリーパイ。サクサクしてとても美味。程良い甘さで、ラズベリーシャーベット付。天国にいるような気分になります！

My friend’s fig pie, she gave a thumb up after just one bite!

友達のイチジクパイ。一口食べただけで友達も大満足！

Tea was not from ordinary tea bag but fine tea leaves.

紅茶も上質な茶葉を使用。

 Nicolas is different from most cafes, not only they serve a good selection of quality sweets, but they also offers proper meals and open till late in the evening. Go to Nicolas if you are looking for late lunch in the area, as they start serving lunch from 2pm!

Nicolasが他のお店と違うのは、美味しいスイーツだけじゃなく、きちんとした食事もあり、また遅くまでオープンしているところ。少し遅めのランチを食べたいときは是非Nicolasに。ランチは2時からのスタートです。

Nicolas is not a non-smoking cafe!

Ceramics Gallery & Cafe Hagi in Kitsuki, Oita.

陶器ギャラリー&カフェ　 萩

Kitsuk is a historic merchant city and is proud of its heritage from the Edo period.  Traces of history remain in the city’s many old buildings such as the samurai residences and the city castle claimed to be the smallest in Japan.

商人の街として有名な杵築市、江戸時代の歴史的名所です。武家屋敷や杵築城など、古い建物を見ると歴史の足跡を感じます。

 It was a very hot Saturday afternoon and the town was deserted.

すごく暑い土曜の午後、街は人気がありません。

 Though I was very impressed with the city’s well-preserved stone-paved streets and steps, but after two hours strolling in this scorching heat, I was forced to seek refuge in a cafe.

市に保存された石畳の道や階段は素晴らしいけど、肌が焼けるような暑さの中2時間程歩くと、カフェに逃げ込みたくなりました。

I found a cafe which was once a residence of a samurai family.

以前武家屋敷だった古民家カフェを発見。

 I had strawberry ice-cream to cool me down!

ストロベリーアイスクリームでクールダウン！

Sipping home grown herbal tea while listening to fine jazz music.

ジャズを聴きながら自家製ハーブティー。

It was like having tea in some0ne’s house.

誰かの家でお茶を飲んでいるような雰囲気です。

Cafe Hagi is also a ceramics gallery, where they served all of their food and drink in handmade tableware , all of which you could purchase from the shop’s corner.

陶器ギャラリーでもあるカフェ萩。食事や飲み物は手づくりの食器で出され、また食器を買うことも出来ます。

Kokochi Cafe Musubino, Kannawa Onsen.

ここちカフェ むすびの

Opened in April this year, this over hundred years old former clinic has been tastefully transformed into a cafe  by its owner.   One glimpse of the exterior and I knew this was the place where I wanted to take a break!

今年4月オープンのカフェ。100年以上クリニックとして使われていた建物をオーナーがカフェにリノベーション。外観を一目見て、ここで一休みすることを決定！

My late lunch started off with this delicious steamed tofu.  Steamed cuisine is one of Beppu local specialities.  Beppu has numerous hot springs, and the locals making use of the natural steam to cook healthy and tasty food.

遅めのランチは、美味しい蒸した豆腐からスタート。蒸し料理は別府の特産。沢山の温泉から出る蒸気を利用してヘルシーで美味しい蒸し料理を作ります。

The main dish was pork steamed with tomatoes.  Followed by chicken steamed in shitake soup, and a pizza made with a wheat-flour base.  The lunch was very good but it was massive that dessert was not necessary!

メインはトマトと豚肉の蒸し料理。さらに蒸したチキンが入った椎茸のスープ、小麦粉を使ったピザと続きます。ランチはとても美味しいけど、ボリュームが大きく、デザートが食べられないほどに。

The owner insisted that I should always have some sweet treats after meals, and gave me these delicious homemade cookies.

食後にお菓子を薦めるオーナー。このホームメードのクッキーをご馳走してくれました。

 I enjoyed them with my Japaense brown tea.

クッキーはこのほうじ茶と一緒に。

 It was very spacious inside.

店内はゆったりとしたスペース。

  I was very pleased with myself that I found this cafe, I just loved the retro atmosphere and the owner’s great hospitality!

このカフェを発見でき大満足。レトロな雰囲気とオーナーのホスピタリティが最高です！

 Before I left I went over to the cafe shop in search for a souvenior to remind me of this lovely place.

おみやげを探すため、店内にあるショップをチェック。

I ended up buying some small ceramic dishes, the cafe’s original products.  The one with the cat motif was inpired by the stray cats in Kannawa Onsen.

カフェ・オリジナルの小さなお皿を買うことに。鉄輪温泉の野良猫をモチーフにしたもの。

Cafe Mingei Tayutofu, Yufuin.

湯布院のカフェ民藝たゆたふ。

It was such a hot day and I was desperate for a drink.  The cafe that I wanted to go was closed for the day.  It was far from the central area, and there was no way to call for a taxi; just when I was not sure what to do, I found this cafe and it turned out to be a real treat for the day!

猛暑の中、喉がカラカラ。行ってみたかったカフェは本日お休み。中心部から離れているためタクシーを呼ぶことも出来ず。途方に暮れている時に見付けたこのカフェで、思いもよらず最高のおやつに！ 

The cafe offered two sweets on the menu, the egg pudding steamed with steam from hot spring, and the red bean chiffon cake served with cream and home grown raspberry.   I ordered the chiffon cake, and a pot of organic black tea named ”Hime Fuki”,  which was highly recommanded by the cafe owner.

メニューには２種類のスイーツ：温泉の蒸気で蒸したエッグプリンと、クリームと自家製ラズベリーが付いた小豆シフォンケーキ。ワタシはシフォン、それからオーナー推薦の”姫ふうき”というブランドのオーガニック紅茶を注文。

I settled down in front of the window looking out to the garden, it was so calm and quiet that I could hear the birds sing as though it was still early in the morning.  The small place was filled with traditional crafts and toys.

窓際のカウンターからは庭が見えます。とても静かで、鳥が鳴いているのが聞こえます。小さなカフェにはクラフトやおもちゃがいっぱい。

As well as many ceramics pieces that were all for sale but also as decorations inside the cafe.

様々なお陶器も。商品ですがカフェのデコレーションとしても一役買っています。

What was I looking at?

何を見ているかって？

It was a kaileidoscope!

万華鏡です！

I am not exaggerating, but the taste of the tea and the chiffon cake was unforgetable!  Especially the tea, it was so rich, delicate,  and naturally sweet!  It tasted exquisite with or without milk!

決して誇張ではなく、この紅茶とシフォンの味は忘れられません！特に紅茶。リッチでデリケート、そして自然な甘さ。ブラックでも、ミルクティーでも、とても上品な味わいです。

The cafe owner was very kind and friendly.  Here I must thank them for giving me a lift to the town centre.  What a pleasant encounter!

親切でフレンドリーなオーナーさん。旦那さんがわざわざ街の中心部まで車で送ってくれました。本当に思いがけない良い出会いでした！
